Most insect zapper companies do not spend on scientific research to ensure that their products are effective. On the other hand, many bug zapper businesses are standing on the shoulders of giants, relying on years of scientific proof to attract and kill mosquitos.
Researchers employed pulsated light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to attract and kill mosquitos in this 2017 study, for example. Researchers were able to minimize power consumption by 26 percent to 40 percent by pulsing the lights. In the meantime, pulsing lights attract mosquitoes more than ordinary LEDs: researchers caught 250 percent more mosquitoes with pulsing lights than conventional LEDs.
Similarly, a 2019 study indicated that installing ultraviolet insect light traps in coastal areas of a mosquito-prone region in Thailand was helpful for mosquito management. After a month of testing, researchers discovered that UV light traps were substantially more successful than other mosquito control strategies. The UV insect light traps caught an average of 41 mosquitos per night. According to this study, UV light traps were proven to be an effective, non-invasive mosquito control tool in Thailand’s coastal areas.
